Competition Details

The competition entitled "William Wallace, My Hero" will encourage pupils to think about what William Wallace would do for them if he was alive today.  In teams of 4-6, they are asked to put forward the continuation of a story which starts:

"William Wallace has travelled through time and has arrived at your school.  He is willing to champion a cause on your behalf to make a change for the better at your school.  In your own words tell us, what happens".

"Contemporary Wallace" might tackle issues including racism, sectarianism, bullying, health issues or  healthy eating.

The format for the competition can be one of the following:
  • A short video of around 3 mins.
  • A multimedia storybook with explanatory text (12-24 frames) ie Microsoft PowerPoint or Clicker software.
Criteria

Each entry should be the work of a group rather than an individual, evidence of cooperative working will be valuable.  Each team should consist of 4-6 primary school pupils (individual entries or those comprising 2 or 3 children will not be accepted).

The judges will be looking for exciting, stimulating entries that show a genuine understanding of William Wallace, and of the issue being tackled.  Imagination and innovation as well as the amount of work and effort put into the project will be key aspects that judges will be looking for.

Entries have to show that they have taken account of the 5-14 curriculum (see the Learning Teaching Scotland website for details http://www.ltscotland.org.uk/ ), and that appropriate ICT skills have been used.

Panel of Judges

The entries will initially be sifted by Scottish Executive officials before being judged by our panel. The panel includes:
  • Nick Morgan, Content Specialist, Learning Teaching Scotland.
  • Elspeth King, Director, The Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum.
Rules

Entries should be supplied burned on CD-ROM [PC or Macintosh] with videos in Microsoft Media File or Quicktime format or multimedia Storybooks in Powerpoint or Clicker formats. The School's Name and Address must be clearly written on BOTH the CD-ROM and the CD-ROM cover.

Teachers must take responsibility for school pupils featured in the images by seeking permission from the parents to display the images on the Wallace

Entries cannot be returned, and will become the joint property of the school and the Scottish Executive and may be used, wholly or in part, in publicity about the challenge and in future projects.

Entries will be hosted on the Wallace website, and therefore available to schools across Scotland, Libraries and Museums.

Late entries or damaged or non working CD-ROMs will be excluded from the competition.

Closing Date

The competition closes Thursday 30th June.

The winning team will be announced on the website on Tuesday 23 August 2005.  The winning team will be informed by letter and the lead teacher informed by telephone.
